AGENCY DESCRIPTION

Pendleton Academies is a non-profit mental-health corporation designed to serve severely disordered children, ages 6-18.  Pendleton Academies’ unique approach to intensive multi-component care includes four primary elements:

1.   A Psychiatrist led clinical regimen of assessment, individual therapy, and group treatment presented by masters and doctorate-level mental-health professionals.

2.   Safe and secure housing in the least restrictive setting possible…a secure residential facility or in Children’s Therapeutic Family homes, which are carefully screened; trained; and selected to observe; support; and supervise each child according to his/her individual treatment needs.

3.   Weekly reviews performed by a treatment team of Pendleton Academies’ professionals, including Board Certified child psychiatrists.

4.   An on-campus school designed specifically for children with histories of school failure, attention deficits, hyperactivity, poor social skills, and learning disorders.

We believe treatment success is more likely to occur after or during crisis if the child, therapist, school, and community work in concert with one another toward common goals.

Program Description

Residential Psychiatric Treatment includes the unique creation of a small "treatment village" of a great many direct-care staff members, professionals, and care-giving homes whose members support each client and themselves through concentrated communication and involvement.  PENDLETON ACADEMIES views each therapeutic home as a social and behavioral opportunity for our children to practice new goals, new behaviors, and new answers to old self-defeating problems.  Our program can allow failure without treatment termination.  Children are placed in therapeutic homes to integrate the reality of functional family dynamics with the clinical treatment efforts of formal residential psychiatric care.  A child may be transferred to the secure facility or to other care homes within the community, as often as needed to achieve success.  Using these interactive treatment resources, the child is held accountable but abandonment/attachment trauma is minimized.  Family services are provided to the family of origin and/or the family in which the client will be placed following treatment.

Assessment & Evaluation offers immediate safety and stability to children in crisis.  Children are admitted into a small residential unit with immediate intense staff attention.  Treatment services begin immediately to try and address each child’s issues as soon as possible.  During the first month, psychiatric; medical; psychological; educational; recreational; family; chemical use; nutritional; and behavioral assessments are completed.  Additional assessments such as fire setter, sexual offender, or neurological testing are completed as indicated.  A recommendation for appropriate treatment services is made based on the strengths and needs of each child, family, and community.  Based on the assessment, a child may stay up to an additional 60 days for brief treatment, including individual; group; and family therapy, continued assessment and discharge planning and placement.  As a child progresses, Therapeutic homes are accessed to continue the assessment and treatment process in a more normative setting.  Children can move back and forth between the residential unit and homes as their treatment needs are accomplished or as a more secure setting is needed.  Family services are provided to the family of origin, therapeutic family, and to the family in which the client will be placed following assessment.

Education Program for all children at PENDLETON ACADEMIES, is based on the individualized education and treatment plan.  Elementary, Middle School, High School, GED, and college educational opportunities can be accessed.  PENDLETON ACADEMIES’ 12-month educational program is composed of academic studies and a life-skills program and is an accredited educational program under the jurisdiction of the Pendleton School District.  When area children are ready, they may be gradually transitioned into the public school system. Recreational options within the community and immediate area are accessed along with on-site facilities.  All children have access to monthly treatment reviews and have access to therapeutic services.

Animal Assisted Therapy is offered to all PENDLETON ACADEMIES’ students as an effective intervention.  Certified EAGALA professionals work closely with the child and his/her treatment team in helping each child grow strengths and overcome behavioral obstacles.  In addition, the recreational opportunities offered through working with animals at the center provides children contact with dogs, cats, rabbits, goats, horses, a miniature pony, and a miniature donkey.
