AGENCY DESCRIPTION

 

The Next Door, Inc. (NDI) is a private, not for profit organization headquartered in Hood River, Oregon serving the Mid-Columbia Region (Hood River, Wasco, and Sherman Counties in Oregon; and Klickitat and Skamania Counties in Washington).  NDI employs 100 people and offers a variety of programs and services designed to meet the needs of youth and families in our area.  Primary contractors include the Department of Human Services, the Oregon Youth Authority, The Oregon Department of Education, Hood River, Wasco and Sherman County Commissions on Children and Families, Hood River, Wasco County Juvenile Departments, Washington State Department of Social and Health Services, local United Ways and numerous foundation and federal grant programs.

Program Description

 

NDI offers a wide array of foster-care based services for youth including short-term shelter-evaluation, longer-term treatment foster care coupled with a day treatment offering and care and treatment for both male and female sex offenders.  Mental-health and counseling services are offered to all youth in care.

Program Description

 

Crisis/Emergency Shelter provides specialized short-term shelter care and support services for Mid-Columbia area children and youth within a foster setting.  Children and youth may be placed by the Center for Living (the local mental health agency), local juvenile departments, Department of Human Services or other Next Door Programs, which serve children and youth in the area.

INDEPENDENT LIVING PROGRAM

The Independent Living Program serves local child welfare youth ages 15 and over.  The program seeks to assist youth in successfully transitioning to adult life in the community.  12-20 youth are served at any one time.  The Oregon State Department of Human Services funds the program.

Program Description

 

Hood River Youth and Family Services provide a wide variety of opportunities for youth and their families in the two Counties.  This program offers an outreach approach to strengthening families, creating community support, and upholding family-initiated goals.  Services include individual and family counseling, parent education, specialty groups, case management, brokering and coordination of resources, mentoring, underage drug use prevention, teen pregnancy prevention, violence prevention and a special focus on the needs of young women.  YFS also operates a Teen Court Program.

COURT APPOINTED SPECIAL ADVOCATES (CASA)

Program Description

 

Court Appointed Special Advocate services healthy developing, thriving children 0-18 years of age.  Children often do not have someone to speak on their behalf.  Our volunteer advocates represent the child’s interests at all legal proceedings, in the community and with other organizations to ensure the child receives the services they need.  Our advocates also work to get children in a safe, stable home.  CGC volunteers receive training in their roles and responsibilities as advocates in legal proceedings, cultural diversity, and signs of abuse and negligence, among other issues.

Big Brothers-Big Sisters in a “best practice” mentoring program that provides adult mentors for at- risk youth in Wasco and Hood River Counties.  Bigs” are carefully screened and undergo a thorough background check.  Trained case managers oversee placements in the two counties.  The Hood River Commission on Children and Families, foundations and fund-raising provides support for the Big Brothers/Sisters Program.

Nuestra Comunidad Sana (NCS) offers drug, alcohol, and tobacco prevention and cessation programs to Hispanic Youth and Adults in Hood River County.  Culturally appropriate educational and cessation programs are developed and offered in both formal and informal settings.  All staff are bilingual/bicultural.  The program is supported the Hood River Commission on Children and Families and a variety of Federal and Foundation grants.

 

Nuestra Comunidad Sana also provides health information and outreach to the farm worker community of the region.  Both year-round and seasonal workers benefit from NCS services.  Health education is imparted via a “promotore” model utilizing trained lay health workers. Educational offerings in the areas of breast cancer, diabetes, HIV and Tobacco use are presently underway.   Funding comes from local hospitals, foundations and federal grants.
